Sunshine George Cross gave newly appointed coach Joe Montemurro a great first up win with this 1-0 victory over the more fancied South Melbourne side. Montemurro took charge of the team on Thursday night after being given his first opportunity to coach at senior level and he seems to have invigorated the squad with his enthusiasm.

SUNSHINE GEORGE CROSS 1 ( WATERSON 9' )

SOUTH MELBOURNE 0

This was indeed a pleasing and important win for the Cross after the sacking of their former coach Chris Taylor earlier in the week. From the outset the Georgies went straight into attack with Fidel Richards twice testing Dean Anastasiadis in the South goal. The Georgie fans were in full voice on 9 minutes when a perfectly flighted ball from Brett Gilmour found Trent Waterson at the back post allowing him to power home a header which left Anastasiadis rooted to the spot.
Soon after the visitors came more into the game when a header from Vaughn Coveny just went over the bar. Sunshine keeper Martin John was forced into action when he saved with his legs from a shot by Kevin Nelson. South Melbourne then won a free kick in a dangerous area just outside the penalty area. From the ensuing set piece Vaughn Coveny forced Martin John into the save of the afternoon. The fiercely driven shot was goal bound, but John dived low to his right to pull off a fanstatic reflex action save. Dusko Delic, playing in his natural role of sitting behind the two front men, was doing his bit to keep South keeper Anastasiadis on his guard when he tested him with another long range pile driver. Trent Waterson nearly added to his goal scoring tally when his effort beat Anastasiadis, but just went past the upright. South's Fernado De Moreas showed his class just before the break when he beat two Georgie defenders to set up Nelson, but his effort sailed way over the cross bar.
The second half saw the home team on the attack once again, but it was Martin John who was called to make a good save from a shot on the turn by Coveny. Sunshine substitute Johnny Cvenatoski came on for Brett Gilmour and immediately tested Anastasiadis with a swerving shot. The Georgies was playing some very constructive football in midifeld with lots of possession and some intricate moves. Tony Neceski was played through with a perfectly timed pass, but after going round the South keeper, he couldn't place the ball into the net from a difficult angle after slipping in the process of shooting. South went all out looking for the equaliser and it took a great block by Colin Azzopardi to deny Kevin Nelson from scoring.
The Georgie defence played like men possessed and put their bodies on the line in order to protect their lead. South became frustrated and referee Perry Mur had to book Arthur Tsonis for back chatting. The visitors also became frustrated as they tried shots from well outside the penalty area that bothered no one except the youngsters behind the goals. Melbourne Victory A League player Rama Tavsancioglu made a brilliant darting run from defence into attack, only to be denied by a Sunshine George Cross defence who was determined not to be beaten for the first time this season. The final whistle brought with it great jubilation from the Georgie faithful who cheered their players all the way to the dressing rooms.
