The Sunshine Georgies have been dragged back into the four team relegation zone courtesy of a 1-0 away defeat at Epping Stadium against the Whittlesea Zebras on Monday night.

WHITTLESEA ZEBRAS 1 ( CELESKI 64' )
SUNSHINE GEORGE CROSS 0

LINE UP :JOHN, AZZOPARDI, OPAZO, ZILIC, KALMAR, GREECHAN, CINI (TRPCEVSKI 65'), NAPOLI, MAGNACCA, SALLEY (GAUCI-SEDDON 63'), FALZON (DELIC 77'). SUBS NOT USED: FIORENZA, SIMSEK

Entering the match, the Georgies record at Epping Stadium was not a good one. Although it was the scene of the clubs promotion to the Premier League in 2004, the Georgies have failed to win there in the previous 3 starts, in fact losing twice and only scoring a solitary goal.

That record was set to continue in a very uninspiring and morbid game of football. Although the Cross looked competitive in 5 to 10 minute patches in isolation, and found great space in the midfield through Nick Kalmar, they lacked penetration in the last third. The only genuine chance of the game for the Cross falling to Chris Greechan late in the first half as the ball was driven into the six yard box from a set piece, however from almost point blank range, the unconvincing strike went inches over the bar.

Conversely, the negative yet effective style of the Zebras was breaking down the attacking moves of the George Cross team in a solid defensive display to maintain a 0-0 scoreline at half time.

The second half began in much the same manner as the first with no apparent tactical or playing style change displayed by either team. However just as the match seemed destined for a 0-0 draw, which under the circumstances would have been an acceptable result for the Cross, the deadlock was broken in the 64th minute by the home team.

A foul on the edge of the area gave Whittlesea the perfect opportunity to score and Billy Celeski did just that with a well stuck curling dead ball kick into the corner of the net, taking advantage of a poor defensive set up by the Georgies.

A further blow struck the visiting Cross with the exit of Jonas Salley with an ankle injury, to be replaced by Adam Gauci-Seddon, and despite the introduction of experienced duo Dusko Delic and Vasko Trpcevski off the bench, the Cross were unable to find the elusive equaliser.

Whittlesea defended smartly in the final 20 minutes to kill the game off, despite numerous corners and searching balls into the Zebras area by the Georgies. The aerial desperation of the Zebras ensured the precious lead would remain intact.

The final whistle was significant for the Georgies as not only did it cause the drop of 4 league table positions but it preceded the resignation of senior coach Joe Montemurro less than 24 hours later.
