Sunshine George Cross slumped to their fourth defeat in the opening six rounds of 2006 Vodafone Cup. Two second half goals were enough to see the Altona Magic home and give them sole leadership at the top of the championship ladder.

On a cool March Saturday night the Georgies were condemned to another loss away to Altona Magic at Paisley Park in a game which will be remembered as Chris Taylor’s last game at the helm.

The Georgies started the game off brightly enough controlling the lion’s share of the possession with lively forward Fidel Richards in the thick of the action. In the 21st minute of the play the first meaningful shot on goal came from captain Manny Muscat as his cross/shot just sailed over the bar. More was to come from the Cross as some neat interpassing allowed the ball to find it’s way to Dusko Delic whose driven cross was scrambled away for a corner after it had bobbled agonisingly close to the right upright with the Magic keeper going the wrong way.

The Magic’s first meaningful attack on goal came in the 30th minute when some quick movement and passing prized open the Cross defence to give Koce Delev the opportunity to give the table toppers the lead. Luckily for the Georgies Martin John was on hand to deny Delev with a great save with his outstretched hand.

The game was being fought in the middle of the park with both teams lacking the creative spark to create enough genuine chances.

Straight after the re-start a knock down from Neceski allowed Filpovic to hit a rasping shot from the edge of the 18 yard box. Unfortunately the ball just cleared the cross bar. Almost immediately the Magic took the lead. An inviting cross found it’s way into the penalty area and after the Georgies defence failed to clear it’s lines the ball fell invitingly to the unmarked Magic skipper Doug Mladenovic who volley a great shot from 20 yards past Martin John.

Chris Taylor made three quick substitutions but none of the players that came on had any influence of the game. The Magic were content with killing the game off with getting bodies behind the ball. The Cross had plenty of possession but were not penetrating enough in the final third of the field. The game as a contest was all but over in the 76th minute when Kovacevic needlessly committed to a ball he was never going to win allowing Opazo to centre the ball to two unmarked team mates in the penalty area. Igor Arsovski made a meal of the opportunity but a lucky ricochet was enough for the ball to roll into an empty net.
