In a thrilling game at Churchill Reserve the Georgies got a well deserved win to
earn their first points for the season.
The game between the two Western Suburbs sides didn't disaapoint with an
entertaining 90 minutes of football. For the Georgies this was a must win
game especially after last weeks disappoint loss to Box Hill.
From the outset it was evident that the Georgies were there for business as they started to take the game to the Saints early on. The Georgies created some great passages of play and Trent Waterson was at his best playing on the right side of midfield getting past his defender on several occasions whipping in some brilliant crosses. It wasn't to long before the hard work and attacking style payed off when Zoran Petrevski found the first goal for the Georgies with a great finish. St Alban's experienced outfit wasn't willing just to throw in the towel and started to lift the tempo of their game and had a few good chances saved by Georgies Keeper Rob Santilli. George Cross slightly the better side heading towards half time however St Albans managed to get an equiliser in the dying minutes with the Saints Striker given too much space inside the box to finish well maiking it 1 -1 at half time.
The second half started well for George Cross as they again started to take the game to St Albans. Watersonand Scerri were causing havoc on either side of the wings as the pairing of Petrevski and Lojanicia up front started to look dangerous. The Georgies had several opportunites to bury the game and in the 78th minute Lujanicia through his persistence put the Cross in front through a class finish at close range. St Albans lifted and were throwing everything at the Georgies which made it an apic last 15 mintues. Captain Steve Martin marshalled the defenece well and the Cross defence was up to the challange and kept the Saints at bay.
Coach Tony Ciantar was delighted with the results and the character and discipline the side showed against a decent St Albans outfit. The Cross will be looking at repeating this form next week against neighbours Western Suburbs at Chaplin Reserve on Sunday, kick off 3.00pm.
