|ROUND 16 PREVIEW|
|Wednesday, 31 May 2006|
Sunshine George Cross take on the Essendon Royals at Chaplin Reserve on Sunday in Round 16 of the Vodafone Cup.
In Round 15, George Cross went down 1-3 against the Preston Lions whilst the Royals lost by one goal to nil against the Melbourne Knights at home. Georgie took an early lead against Preston, but the Lions, returning to Connor Reserve, were eager to impress their loyal supporters and that they did by snaring the three points.
The Round 3 game between the Cross and the Royals at the Veneto was won by Essendon with a very late goal. It was a game where Georgie just couldn't find the back of the net and matters were made worse with a send off after only half an hour of play. Essendon found the winner after a quick counter attacking move caught the Georgies off guard.
After a slow start to the season, Essendon then embarked on a seven game unbeaten run which propelled the Royals back in to Finals contention. Some bad results then saw Luciano Trani hand in his resignation as coach. David Winton has replaced Trani, but the Royals have only managed to register one win in the past six Rounds. That win was a 2-1 victory against last placed Richmond.
The Georgies' dismal away form continued against Preston, but this week they are back at Chaplin where they are undefeated since a 0-2 Round 4 loss to the Melbourne Knights. The positive news from Round 15 was Fidell Richards finding the back of the net. The in form striker has now netted five goals in four games.
The League takes a break after Round 16 with the next two weekends off. Round 17 commences on June 23.
In other games: Friday night: Oakleigh v Fawkner-Whittlesea and Richmond v Melbourne Knights. Saturday: Frankston Pines v Green Gully. Sunday: South Melbourne v Kingston and Preston v Altona Magic. Monday night: Bulleen v Heidelberg.
