Playing their first game at home for quite some time after the playing surface was damaged by local bird life, Preston made up for lost time on their return home, with this impressive win. It was the Georgies who launched a spirited opening and went ahead after only 4 minutes when Mark Draycott laid the ball into the path of the on rushing Fidel Richards who blasted the ball into the back of the net from 15 metres.
Richards almost doubled the score 2 minutes later when he once again was on target, only to be denied this time by a finger tip save by the Preston keeper. The great start gave the travelling Georgie fans some great hope for the afternoon but it turned sour very quickly when in the 7th minute Richards turned the ball over after a call from ex Georgie player Marinos Gasparis. Richards thinking the call had come from a team mate played the ball towards his own goal without lifting his head . Within the blink of an eye, Preston was level as Nick Lazerevski slid the ball home past the outstretched hand of Martin John from close range.
The goal lifted the home team, as they grew in confidence, creating lots of space and openings, whereas the Georgies lost control and composure with continual uncharacteristic turnovers. Preston forced the visitors on the back foot and went ahead after some slack marking by the Georgie defenders. Following a corner kick in the 29 minute, Erhan Karahan headed in unchallenged past an unguarded upright.
The Georgies improved slightly in the second half, but never at any stage did they look convincing. They pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but chances were few and far between. Preston on the other hand always looked dangerous with their quick counter thrusts, and always looked the side more likely to score.
The best opportutnity for the Georgies came in the 74 minute, when after some neat inter passing, Trent Waterson fired over from a good position with only the keeper to beat. Six minutes later a goal mouth scramble saw three Sunshine George Cross players swing at the ball from inside the 6 yard box, but none could get a forceful shot in at goal.
In the 82 minute the game was all over, as another quick clearance from the Preston defence, found John Sapasovski in the clear. The talented striker lobbed the bouncing ball over Daniel Rocco, then over on rushing goalkeeper Martin John to walk the ball into the empty net.
The Georgie players kept battling on until the final whistle playing to the system that coach Joe Montemurro has instilled in them, but today was not their day. Everyone connected with the club knows they are capable of playing better than what was on offer at Preston. This coming Sunday the Georgies are at home when they take on the Essendon Royals in a vital game that will decide who will continue to struggle in the relegation zone.
