ROUND 8 PREVIEW PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 29 March 2006
This Friday night Sunshine George Cross travel to the Jack Edwards Reserve for their Round 8 Vodafone Cup fixture against the Oakleigh Cannons.

Can the Georgies end their barren run in night games and away fixtures? Oakleigh away is a tough assignment for any club but with the Cannons only managing to gain two points from their last two home games is there a question mark hanging over their Championship credentials?
Joe Montemurro's Premier League coaching debut for Sunshine George Cross was impressive in a 1-0 victory over the more fancied South Melbourne. It was a disciplined and determined performance which not only resulted in a much needed three points but also the club's first clean sheet of the season.
Martin John made some fantastic saves in goal whilst Colin Azzopardi was his reliable self and Sime Kovacevic had arguably his best game in a Georgie shirt. Captain Manny Muscat was also in fine form. Other solid contributors were Ivan Filipovic and Fidel Richards whilst Tony Neceski as usual worked tirelessly all day.
Oakleigh on the other hand had to rely on a penalty to ensure a share of the spoils last weekend against the Melbourne Knights in a 1 all draw.
The Cannons sit fourth on the League table with 12 points. They are undefeated with three wins and three draws. They began the season with all guns blazing winning their three opening games, however they have only managed to pick up three points out of a possible nine in their last three games.
A team with the likes of Bill Damianos, Sam Poutakidis, Cameron Pino and Anthony Pelikan is always going to be challenging for a spot in the Finals, but current form suggests otherwise and with the renewed confidence in the Georgie camp and players fighting for their spot in the first eleven under a new coach another upset could be the result.

In other games: Fawkner-Whittlesea are away to Richmond in the other Friday night fixture, whilst the two games on Saturday are Frankston Pines vs Essendon and Altona Magic vs South Melbourne. On Sunday Green Gully take on Preston and Heidelberg entertain Kingston. The Monday night fixture sees the Melbourne Knights travel to Bulleen.
