At the end of this titanic encounter against third placed Altona Magic, it the Sunshine Georgies who walked off the park the most disappointed of the two sides in this 1-1 thriller.

Paisley Park has not been a good hunting ground for the Sunshine George Cross over the years and a point at this venue would normally be considered a good result. With the race for a spot in the finals so tight, the 2 points dropped in this match could come back to haunt the team at the end of the season. The Georgies were the dominant side in a very keenly contested match but failed to take advantage of several goal scoring chances created in the second half. The visitors had the strong winds at their backs in the first half and from the kick off pinned the Magic in their own half. After only 4 minutes a speculative 30 metre shot by John Sapazovski forced goalkeeper Bojo Jevdjevic into tipping the ball over the bar for a corner. From the resultant corner kick taken by Joe Clancy, Jevdjevic misjudged the flight of the ball, but Georgie captain Wayne Wallace headed wide with an open goal staring him in the face. The Georgies kept the pressure up, but found it difficult getting a look in at goal. The windy conditions badly affected the quality of the game with many misjudged and ill directed passes. Altona's forays forward in the first half were minimal, but Adam Fadaljevic sent a scare through the Georgie camp when he cut in from the left and found space in the penalty area. His shot however was poor and didn't match his lead up work. Both keepers were having it easy but Bojo Jevdjevic did have to be on his toes to see another John Sapazovski free kick sail narrowly over his cross bar, and and he was in the right place to stop a first time volley from George Papadopoulos. A long free just before the break by Jack Webster created confusion in the Magic defence with Philip Riccobene's header go for a corner kick after just clearing the cross bar. Despite playing against the wind in the second half Sunshine went straight into attack and nearly took the lead after 49 minutes. Good lead up work by Fidel Richards on the left, saw Joe Clancy deliver another perfect cross to Alan Kearney whose flick on found John Sapazovski in the clear. Sapazovski's shot was blocked by the foot of the falling Jevdjevic. The game picked up in pace and intensity but there was still many mistakes being made due to the conditions. Phil Riccobene darting run ended up with an aimless pass forward. There were some very good duels all over the ground but the battle between John Sapazovski and the Altona's strong central defender Steve Laurie was outstanding. Honours were even with Sapazovski having good chances to score while Laurie often came to the rescue of his side. The Georgies broke the deadlock after 74 minutes following a corner kick. The ball was scrambled home by Jack Webster after the Magic defence failed to clear their lines. The joy of the travelling Georgie fans was short lived however as Altona drew level within 2 minutes. Sunshine's defence could not clear the danger with the ball bobbling about the edge of the penalty area. Pece Siveski unleashed a tremendous shot that served of the back of Sunshine's Wayne Wallace and over goalkeeper Martin John. The ball struck the underside of the cross bar and finished up over the goal line and high in the net. Sunshine responded with a shot just over the bar after good play between Richards and Sapazovski. The Georgies should have restored their lead after a series of passes that found John Sapazovski all by himself in front of the Magic keeper. The Georgie striker took his time and placed his shot well but the outstreched foot of Bojo Jevdjevic denied a certain goal. Altona tried some long range shots with the best effort coming from Slave Bozinovski whose 30 metre low drive forced Martin John into deflecting the ball around the post for a corner.  Bozinovski outpaced Nicholas Scwall on the left flank in a race for the ball and played a perfect pass to Michael Curcija in the clear close to goal. Martin John saw the danger and quickly got down at Curcija's feet to make the save and clear a dangerous situation for Sunshine. At the other end Wayne Wallace found Neal Hooks in the clear but his shot on the turn was well saved by JevdjevicFidel Richards was a scrourge for Altona with his speed and determination. His pace took him past his marker and his lay off across goal found Alan Kearney all by himself with an open goal in front of him. Kearney was not fast enough in shooting and his ettempt was blocked by the Magic defence. Neither side was able to find the winning goal as referee Perry Mur brought proceding to an end, in a match that ignited to life in the second half. In the under 21 game Sunshine George Cross defeated Altona Magic 4-2. UNDER 21: The Georgies took a 1-0 lead into the break and ran out easy winners in the second half. A brace of goals from Carlos Barrientos, one goal from Evan Christodoulou and an own goal was enough to secure the U/21 's third win on the trot. This coming Sunday Sunshine George Cross end their playing days at Chaplin Reserve when they take on Preston Lions. After 28 years at Chaplin Reserve the time has come for the club to move to another venue as the facilities at Chaplin Reserve are not up to the required V.P.L. standard. The club urges all supporters to get down to Chaplin Reserve for a final time to farewell a ground that has served football well for over 55 years. For this occasion the Georgies are organising a PRE-MATCH LUNCHEON. A three course meal will be served, plus a complimentary glass of wine, as well as a door prize to be won. Limited tickets are still available. Please contact Victor Brincat on 0447 549 771. Cheers Vic Brincat.
