Despite a dominance of possession, seven strikes on target and no less than nineteen set pieces and corners, Sunshine George Cross succumbed to its second successive defeat in as many weeks at the hands of the Fawkner Blues, losing 1-0, a direct reversal of the Easter Monday result earlier in the season.

SUNSHINE GEORGE CROSS 0

FAWKNER 1 ( TSIORLAS 45' )

LINE UP: JOHN, AZZOPARDI, NAPOLI, TSOUMERKAS, TALEVSKI, MAGNACCA, TRPCEVSKI , DELIC (CINI 51'), ESPOSITO, KALMAR, OPAZO (MARKOVSKI 64') . SUBS NOT USED: FIORENZA, DIMOVSKI, RUSSELL

In smash and grab fashion, the Blues capitalised well on a set piece on the stroke of halftime when a well placed ball fell at the feet of striker Mark Tsiorlas who was allowed to turn and place his shot into the bottom corner of the net beyond the outstretched hands of Martin John.

What makes the defeat the more painful for the Cross was that this was the Blues only genuine opportunity on target, and apart from this, the visitors rarely looked threatening when going forward. The home teams possession, and abundance of set pieces, unfortunately did not pay the dividend of a precious goal.

The structure of the midfield was upset with the forced suspension of hard man Brett Gilmour due to five yellow cards, as the line up was re-shuffled with Michael Esposito and Nick Kalmar coming into the side with Matthew Cini relegated to the bench.

Kalmar accomplished himself extremely well with a clean game in midfield and was never afraid to create chances for the strikers or to strike on goal off his own boot. Cini was to come on midway through the second half for an injury riddled Dusko Delic who was having no impact on the game.

A fine goalkeeping display by the Fawkner keeper combined with the inability of the Sunshine midfielders and strikers to find the net enabled the Blues to leapfrog the Georgies on the table and force them down to 14th position.

The consolation for the Georgies is that there are still plenty of games and points to be played for including games in hand on the teams both below and above, however, more goals at the correct end of the pitch, better defending and greater effort is required.
