Chaplin Reserve hosts the vital Round 23 Vodafone Cup clash between Sunshine George Cross and the Frankston Pines.

On Monday night the Georgies came from behind with two late goals to register a 2-1 win against Bulleen. Frankston Pines also picked up three points in Round 22 running out 3-2 winners against the Melbourne Knights.

In a disappointing performance at Monterey Reserve, Frankston took all three points against Georgie with a convincing 3-0 victory. The Pines seem to have the edge over the Georgies at home and away and this display left Georgie supporters wondering when they would ever see a positive result against Frankston.

With both teams in the bottom two this clash could be a dour relegation battle and with Division One football staring both teams in the face, this game will be worth much more than the three competition points on offer.

The Pines have won their last two games bringing an end to their winless streak which lasted ten rounds. Frankston have scored five goals in the last two rounds but this only takes their season tally to twenty: the lowest in the league. They also have the worst goal difference with minus sixteen. The Georgies showed true fighting spirit in the win against Bulleen, their first victory since Round 16 to show the season is far from over.

George Cross now have 23 points, only 4 points behind ninth placed Melbourne Knights. The bottom half of the table is very close with any number of teams still in danger of relegation. Current form: Knights (9th, 27 pts) lost 4 out of last 5 games. Bulleen (10th, 26 pts) lost 4 in a row. Fawkner (11th, 25 pts) lost 4 in row. Essendon (12th, 24 pts) lost 3 out of last 4. Frankston Pines (14th, 21 pts) won 2 in a row.

In other games: Friday night: Kingston v Richmond. Saturday: Altona Magic v Bulleen. Sunday: South Melbourne v Oakleigh, Melbourne Knights v Green Gully and Preston v Fawkner-Whittlesea. Monday night: Essendon v Heidelberg.
