VALE NORM HOBSONLast Updated on Monday, 08 December 2014 20:40
All at Sunshine George Cross are saddened to hear of the passing of Norm Hobson, who was one of the best goalkeepers to play for George Cross FC. Norm Hobson joined George Cross from Moreland in 1960 and immediately became a supporters favourite by thrilling fans with his heroics every weekend. The move from Moreland paid dividends for the club and Hobson himself. He was good at Moreland, but grew in stature at George Cross to quickly established himself as the leading custodian in Victoria. The likeable Hobson became the number one keeper in the State and represented Victoria over the next four years against many touring overseas teams. After performing very well against English football giants Everton, he had offers to go overseas, but he had no wish to return to England. During his football career between the sticks the great goalkeeper had the misfortune of breaking most fingers in both hands. When he signed with George Cross he said: “I look forward to my future with George Cross and I have never been happier, I would also like to say that the people at the club, whether they be Maltese, English, Scottish, or whatever, are the greatest bunch of fellows I could possibly ever wish to be associated with. I am happy to wear the goalkeeper's jersey for as long as the club thinks I am good enough”. It is sad that Norm should pass away on the 50th anniversary when Norm and his George Cross team mates won the club's highest honour 'The Australia Cup'. In his distinguished career Norm Hobson played for Moreland, George Cross, Wilhelmina, Croatia and A.P.I.A in Sydney.
May the great keeper
'Rest in Peace'.
