Sunshine George Cross was relegated from from the Victorian Premier League after being overwhelmed by a rampant South Melbourne side 4-0. The Georgies were in this game till half time trailing 1-0, but once South scored their second goal early in the second half, the contest was over. Throughout the match the Greek side was always a class above the Georgies creating space at will and looking dangerous with every attack. It was Sunshine that began the brightest with 3 quick corners with the final corner ending up with South scrambling the ball clear after the ball hit the post. The match was played on a very heavy pitch with several patches of water covering the ground. This did not stop South Melbourne from playing some great on the ground football that at times threatened to cut open the Georgies defence. Sunshine George Cross played their part in an entertaining first half, but could not capitalise on good opportunities from several chances. South took the lead after 12 minutes with a thunderous shot by Fernando De Moreas from just insuide the penalty area. The Georgies defence was very loose at times, allowing danger forwards Fernando De Moreas and Marinos Gasparis far too much space. Fernando almost grabbed his second goal following some poor defence work by the Georgies. De Moreas was allowed to twice shoot for goal with his second effort going narrowly over the bar. Sunshine had a great chance to draw level after 26 minutes when a great cross from Leo Shin found James Blackburn who controlled the ball well. He passed it to Fidell Richards who turned his marker, but his goal bound shot hit a team mate in the back of the head, and went out for a goal kick. Richards produced a great pass to Tex Apostalikos who from a good position, shot past the upright. South looked the more composed team, but the Georgies matched them well in the opening 45 minutes. After the break South went on the attack and once the Blues increased their lead, the game was as good as over. A header by Daniel Vasilevski hit the cross bar with the ball landing at the feet of Fernando De Moreas who had the simple task of scoring his second goal from one yard. That was the killer goal as South grew in confidence while the Georgies knew their Premier League season was over. After several near misses Carl Recchia added number 3 after 73 minutes from a well taken 20 metre free kick. South captain Rama Tavsancioglou added the 4th goal not long after, and all connected with Sunshine begging the referee to end the misery. The Georgie boys tried to the very end, but unfortunately came up against a side very much on top of their game at the moment. Sunshine George Cross will now take stock of their football department, and will be looking to playing the 2011 first division football back at their home ground Chaplin Reserve. The team is out of the V.P.L., but the club lives on.
