Despite dominating for the majority of this match, Sunshine George Cross slumped to their 5th successive defeat going down 1-0 to Bentleigh Greens. The cold, wet and blustery conditions on Friday night at Kingston Heath restricted the crowd, but those who braved the elements witnessed a very keenly contested and exciting match. The win for Bentleigh elevated them into the top 5, prior to other round 15 matches being played, while the Georgies slide down the ladder continued. Sunshine George Cross introduced newly arrived Gavin Hurren in defence, and also welcomed back Matty Cini into the squad after his hamstring tear. The Georgies however had to do without striker Tex Apostolikas who was away on his honeymoon after getting married. The home side kicked off with a strong wind at their backs and after only four minutes created the first scoring opportunity. Defender Jack Webster found himself with space on the edge of the penalty area, but floated his shot over the bar. The visitors took control after this with good on the ground passing that ended up with Andrew Bourakis turning his opponent and forcing Damir Salcin into a fine save. Salcin was again called into action after 19 minutes following a good cross from Gavin Hurren that ended up with a James Blackburn header being stopped on the goal line. Sunshine's through passes from the midfield trio of Fidell Richards, Ben Cogger and Shaun Romein created problems for Bentleigh's defence with a through pass from Shaun Romein put Andrew Nabbout one on one with the keeper. The 17 year old was under heavy pressure running in on goal and his attempt went wide. The game turned sour for Sunshine after 36 minutes when new recruit Gavin Hurren limped off injured after 36 minutes and within 3 minutes Bentleigh Greens took the lead following against the run of play. A long clearance from defence saw John Sapazovski flick a header into the path Dean Piemonte. He squared a pass into the path of Adam Fadijevic who had the easy task of giving the Greens the lead. The goal unsettled the Georgies and within 3 minutes Damir Lokvancic could have doubled the home side's lead when he got behind Sunshine's defence. His effort caused Martin John no problems. The Georgies continued on the attack after the break with a dazzling run by Fidell Richards found Andrew Bourakis in front of goal. Bourakis was tripped by goalkeeper Damir Salcin as he attempted to shoot, with the referee having no hesitation pointing to the penalty spot. Salcin was fortunate to receive only a caution for his wild tackle. The new Bentliegh keeper turned from villian into a hero by brilliantly saving Cameron Douglas spot kick. Bentleigh came more into the game with good inter-passing up the left wing that ended up with a good opportunity for Anthony Ouliaris. He couldn't capitalise on the opportunity and fluffed his chance. Sunshine George Cross continued pressing for an equaliser with Ben Cogger weaving through the Bentleigh defence and feeding Andrew Bourakis. Once again Damir Salcin rescued the home team turning a goal bound shot around the upright. From the resultant corner kick, Fidell Richards had his shot charged down with the ball falling to Ben Cogger who from 30 metres let fly with a rocket of a shot. The goal bound shot produced the save of the night from Damir Salcin. The ball was heading for the top corner but Salcin would not be beaten, flying across and finger tipping the ball over the cross-bar. Try as they may, the Georgies could not pierce the last line of Bentleigh's defence with Salcin proving to be a valuable acquisition for Bentleigh following his transfer from Preston. Bentleigh had withstood all that Sunshine could muster and began building their own dangerous attacks. Twice they worked good openings with Martin John being called to make a low save. Sunshine's keeper could do little a few minutes before the end when a powerful drive from Dean Piemonte struck the underside of the cross-bar and was cleared. Sunshine George Cross mounted a final rally in injury time with an all out attack that ended up with Cameron Douglas missing the target from 2 metres to deny his side a share of the points. It was hard to separate the man of the match, with Fidell Richards starring for the Cross, while Damir Salcin was the reason why Bentleigh ended up earning all 3 points. In round 16 the Georgies have a home fixture against Hume City at the Knights Stadium on Monday night June 28.
