The final game of round 10 between Sunshine George Cross and Dandenong Thunder ended all square at 1-1 in a no holds barred contest. The large crowd in attendance at the Knights Stadium on Monday night was treated to an absorbing match that took quiet a while to build up before producing a very tense and exciting finish. Prior to the match Martin John was presented with a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion of his 100th match for the Georgies. For the second successive match Sunshine George Cross was coached by Theo Constantinou who was deputising for Andy O'Dell who was absent due to the sickness of his wife. The Cross was dealt another blow during the week with influential midfielder Steve Becks missing, after declaring he wants to transfer to third division side Dandenong City. It was a slow and hesitant start from both sides with the visitors holding the upper hand in the first half without posing too many problems for the Sunshine defence. Dandenong's Veton Korcarevski created the first chance of the game when his pass found Scott Bullock. The Perth Glory loan player shot poorly without Martin John being troubled. At the other end, the Thunder defence had to scramble the ball away to safety after several Georgie attempts at goal, with the ball being cleared to Matthew Cini. The Georgie defender beat one player and played in Kyle Joryeff, who shot way over the cross-bar from close range. Dandenong's Joey Di Iorio was being closely marked by David Calleja, but he managed to escape the close attention in the 32 minute to produce a perfect through pass to Scott Bullock who once again shot weakly at Martin John. The Georgies were finding it difficult going forward and created very little threat in attack. The Cross suffered another setback after 40 minutes when captain Fidell Richards went off with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Ben Cogger. Sunshine George Cross lifted their game after the break and forced the Thunder on the back foot. However it was Dandenong who almost took the lead after 60 minutes when they had the Georgie defence scrambling to clear the ball to safety. The home team was being given great drive through man of the match Evan Christodoulou. The youngster broke up many Dandenong attacks, chased back to defend throughout the night, and produced his silky skills. Christodoulou also set the knights Stadium alight in the 70th minute with possibly the goal of the year. He controlled a high ball well and fired home a bullet of a shot from 30 metres that flew past Dandenong's keeper Stuart Webster. The game opened up with both sides attacking at will. Both goal keepers were kept busy as the play swung from end to end. It was tense and exciting for both sets of supporters with Dandenong fans rejoicing wildly in the 81 minute when Veton Koncarevki equalised following a long throw-in that produced another all mighty scramble in the Sunshine penalty area. The George Cross defence appeared to stop allowing the Dandy striker with an easy shot the flew past Martin John. The Georgie keeper was called into action 3 minutes later when he deflected a low shot over the cross-bar for a corner kick. The home team had the final effort on goal following a free kick by Kyle Joryeff from 20 metres. His low shot hit the Dandenong keeper in the chest with the ball rebounding towards a crowded penalty area, before Dandenong cleared the ball to safety. For Sunshine George Cross it was a satisfactory result with the point taking the team into the top 5 for the first time this season.
