The George Cross diehards who went to this round 5 match at Ormond Park walked away very satisfied after seeing their team score a convincing 4-1 win over Essendon Royals.
Wins of late have not come easy for George Cross and it was particularly satisying to see our team score four goals for the first time since July 29 2017.

After an even opening it was the George Cross goalkeeper Ryan Gauci who was first tested when he was forced into a fine save from close range.

Essendon took a 23rd minute lead in fortunate fashion when a deflected shot wrong footed Gauci to open the scoring.

The setback produced a positive response from the visitors as they drew level following a long range free kick by Liam Harding. His shot was tipped onto the cross-bar by the Essendon keeper and the ever alert George Cross captain George Tsiakalakis was on the spot to nod the ball home from close range.

Nelson Salvatore worked hard to close down his opponent and won the ball. His low centre found Dominic Swinton at the far post, but his shot was blocked ty the Royals keeper.

George Cross was forcing Essendon into errors and Daniel Slovacek was unfortunate when he wriggled into the penalty are, but his final shot ended up going for a corner-kick.

The Cross took a deserved lead just before half-time when a 20 metre free-kick by Yuji Kin was expertly placed into the corner of the net past a bewildered Essendon defence.

Within a minute of taking the lead George Tsiakalakis was harshly punished when a shot from close range hit his arm and the referee awarded Essendon a penalty.

Justice appeared to have been done when the penalty-kick was blasted way over the cross-bar.

George Cross had to withstand some home team pressure early in the second half and Ryan Gauci was forced into making a desperate save with his feet.

Three minutes into the second half a through ball from Liam Harding found Dominic Swinton on the right flank, he cut inside his marker and scored with a cracking shot to make it 3-1.

On the 58th minute mark Yuji Kin hassled his opponent and won the ball. He played a smart pass out wide to Swinton and he made no mistake to wrap the game up for George Cross.

The Georgies allowed the home team to have the ball in non-dangerous areas and despite forcing several corners Ryan Gauci and his co-defenders had all bases covered.

George Cross was content to play on the break and threatened several times without being able to find the final pass on goal. Our team was in full control and looked the more likely side to add to the score.

It wasn’t to be, but Georgie fans leaving the ground walked away with smiles on their faces after a very convincing win.
