Caroline Springs George Cross recorded their first win of the season when they convincingly defeated Yarraville Glory 3-1. Coach Corey Smith once again made major changes that saw the return of Nelson Salvatore and the introduction of 17 year-old youngster Alex Dimond. The latter made a impressive debut at right-back that left a lasting impression amongst every George Cross fan.

The Cross took the lead in this game after 18 minutes with a well worked goal that began with left-back Ryan Leetch and involved five of his team-mates before ending up with Daniel Slovacek who scored with a low long range shot.

The rest of the half wasn’t too scientific with play being congested in midfield and lots of stop start football. There was very little flow to the game with both goalkeepers well protected.

Deep into injury time a long range Nelson Salvatore free-kick eluded a pack of players and the Yarraville goalkeeper to give the Georgies a comfortable 2-0 half-time lead.

Within 3 minutes of the restart Yarraville pulled a goal back when another long hope full ball into the George Cross penalty area was allowed to bounce instead of being cleared first time. This allowed a Yarraville forward to nip in and calmly score with an overhead kick.

For while the Cross was on the back-foot, but the Georgie defence stood tall and remained cool and calm and always in control of the situation.

Hard working Liam Harding asserted his superiority in midfield and this swayed the game in the visitors favour for the rest of the game.

The Cross sealed the win in the 80th minute when a pass from the right wing was misjudged by a Glory defender. The ever alert Yuji Kin pounced on the opportunity and hammered home the all-important 3rd goal.

The long awaited win was a very merited and is bound to instill a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. This win over Yarraville was  the second this season following the FFA Cup 3-2 win a few weeks ago. Well played Georgies!!
