BANYULE CITY BULLS 0 CAROLINE SPRINGS GEORGE CROSS 0
Caroline Springs George Cross kicked off the 2019 season with a 0-0 draw on the road against Banyule City Bulls. The Georgies had control of the opening 45 minutes and went close to scoring as early as the 4th minute. The City goalkeeper failed to hold on to a hard shot and it was Kobe Kemp who pounced on the rebound only to see his shot blocked on the goal line and cleared away.

Next it was the ever alert Dominic Swinton's turn to test the Bulls keeper when his rasping shot appeared destined for the top corner. To his credit the goalkeeper excelled in turning the ball over the bar. The Cross did not allow the home team to settle into any rhythm with Nelson Salvatore was causing plenty of problems on the left wing. Fullbacks George Tsiakalakis and Chris Traintos were solid at the back initiated many attacks.

Daniel Slovacek, Kobe Kemp and Liam Harding were in charge in midfield and it was Liam Harding who tried his luck from distance. Twice he saw his long rang drives just go over the cross-bar. The opportunities were there, but none were converted with the score remaining 0-0 at the break.

Goal scoring chances were at a premium in the second half as Banyule that began to grow more into the game. With the wind in their favour the home team pushed forward and forced several corners.  The Georgies defence had far more work during this period as Banyule began to ask questions, mainly from the right flank.

The central pairing of Rayane Frihi-Luiz and Jakob Krajacic had full control at the back with Krajacic commanding in the air and Frihi-Luiz doing his fair of work by blocking several shots.

Both sides went close when shots from outside the penalty area rebounding into play off the upright. Substitute Yuji Kin had a good opportunity late in the game for the Cross when his turn and shot just went over the cross-bar, while the tiny Banyule’s winger almost snatched the 3 points for his side in the dying stages of the match when his flick shot went just wide of the post.

A draw was a fitting result in a game that was well fought out by both teams in very hot and humid conditions.
