C.S.G.C.F.C. lost no friends despite the 2-1 loss to N.P.L. champions Heidelberg United. The Bergers were the bigger, stronger and fitter team and began on the front foot from the start. They dominated for long periods, but the Georgie defence did well to restrict any clear openings. The first goal scored by Heidelberg came from a free-kick from just outside the penalty-area given for an unfortunate handball. Goalkeeper Ryan Gauci was left stranded to the spot from the well taken free-kick that sailed over the wall and into the net. Heidelberg made it 2-0 at half-time with a goal from an acute angle after some sloppy defending on the left flank. The Georgie boys didn't drop their heads and came out with renewed vigour in the second half to make a game of it. Hugh Undy pulled a goal back and for a while an equaliser was on the cards, but it wasn't to be. Heidelberg had that little bit in reserve and defended their lead over the closing stages to run out deserved winners. Every Caroline Springs player can hold their heads up high for the performance in giving the Victorian champions a run for their money. Coach Corey Smith told us after the game: “Overall we were superb for the stage of the season we're at. We can probably shape some areas that we have to work on, but considering we played against one of the top five teams outside the A League we were more than competitive".
