COREY SMITH NEW COACH

All at the club extend a warm welcome to newly appointed coach Corey Smith. The 35 year old coach comes to George Cross after guiding 3rd division State League club Sabastapol Vikings to a fourth place finish this past season. Much to Corey's disappointment the Vikings missed out on promotion by 1 point. Smith's playing career has been mainly in Tasmania where he played for championship winning team University during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. He then moved to Metro Claremont for two seasons and won the club's Best & Fairest medal.

More honours were to follow with Hobart Juventus and Glenorchy Knights where he collected five championship medals between 2004 and 2010. As a youngster he has represented Tasmania at every youth level.

Smith is an ambitious coach who demands success and his main aim in his first season at his new club is to rebuild the side and to be at the right end of the league table at the business end of the season. He realises it is going to be a tough season with many stumbling blocks and challenges that need to be overcome.

Smith said, "My challenge is to confront each challenge head-on as my long term ambition is to return George Cross to being a power-house in Victorian football. This is going to take time and a collective effort is needed from all at the club to make it happen. I like my team to play with a distinctive style and to be well organised and I cannot stress the importance of getting good early results".

In 2019 the club is moving into state of the art facilities at Taylor's Hill and for the first time in the club's long history George Cross will have something to offer their supporters. Smith said, "it is only fitting we have a team suitable to match the surrounds". The club also has much pleasure in welcoming back David Clarkson who has been appointed Smith's assistant for 2019. Clarkson was at Sunshine George Cross for two season in 1989-90 and 1990-91 and then moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in England.

To both coaches we say welcome and wish you a successful and happy stay at Caroline Springs George Cross F.C.
