A GAME OF MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

Springvale White Eagles and Sunshine George Cross drew 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon in a game full of wasted opportunities. Both teams attacked with verve, but for one reason or another neither side could find the back of the net, till late in the match.

The Georgies added Brandon Scerri as a replacement for Damien Rastocic. Adrian Logozzo also started after he participated and scored in the under 20 game.

For the second week running Sunshine George Cross let a goal lead slip late in the match and had to settle for a point in both matches, when with a little more care, it could have been so much better.

Georgie defender Martin Mason appeared to have given the visitors to the Serbian Sport Centre all three points when he scored in the 82nd minute with a flying header, only to see Springvale White Eagles’ Hernan De Rito level the score two minutes from time.

Both teams went forward at every opportunity in the first half and created good openings without making the break.

The game became wiling in the second half with three players picking up yellow cards.
Sunshine’s Brandon Scerri and Christopher Dib, as well as Springvale's Vedran Tomic went into the referee's note-book.

George Cross asserted their superiority in the second half and were looking dangerous.

They came close to taking the lead in the 74th minute following a free-kick that found Martin Mason. His well flighted centre found Adrian Logozzo, but he couldn't direct his header on target.

With only eight minutes remaining, the Sunshine George Cross camp were in full voice thinking justice had been done when they scored what they believed to be the winning goal.

Following numerous missed chances Jacob Attard's free-kick was finally converted by Martin Mason header.

The home team became the aggressor as they pushed men forward in search for the equaliser.

In the 88th minute the Cross cracked when Hernan De Rito went past a panicky Sunshine George Cross defence allowing him to place his shot past young James Kapuranovski for the equaliser.

The miserable ending was compounded with Adamson Ajayi leaving the field injured and an injury time goal being mysteriously disallowed for off-side, when striker Christopher Antoniadis broke past the Eagles defence to score what looked to be the winning goal.
