A badly depleted Sunshine George Cross came to within twelve minutes of claiming all three points and a first home win of the season, but had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw against Dandenong City. The under 20 side was also hard hit by injuries and were unlucky to lose 3-2 in the earlier game.

The senior team was dealt a body blow during the week leading up to the match with injuries to goalkeeper Robert Santilli (broken finger), Brandon Scerri (injured knee), Damian Rastocic (unavailable) and the withdrawal just prior to the match of defender Martin Mason (hamstring).

After a rather quiet opening to the match sixteen year-old Georgie keeper James Kapuranovski was called upon to save one overhead kick and had an anxious moment watching the ball go wide and over his cross-bar after a clever lob from Ashley Cattermole.

The Georgies had their moments in attack with Bobby Lojanica playing a leading role. It was competitive with some hard tackles going in as the Cross seized control for the rest of the first half.

The home team deservedly led at the break with a goal in the 39th minute scored by Chris Antoniadis. The diminutive striker latched on to a clever pass from Bobby Lojanica, turned and shot in one motion to open the scoring.

Within minutes of scoring Antoniadis almost made it 2-0 when Lojanica once again found him all by himself, but his shot went narrowly past the far post.

Both teams wrestled for supremacy in the second half with neither team posing a threat to the well drilled defences. It wasn't exciting football, but for the home team the ploy appeared to be working as they edged towards the finishing line.

James Kapuranovski was called into action at the 70th minute mark when he blocked a one on one situation with Dandenong's Keegan Ziada.

Sunshine efforts were constantly stifled by the Dandenong's well set off-side trap with Bobby Lojanica being the main culprit.

An unnecessary hand ball by Nemanja Lojanica just outside the penalty area was to undo all the good work for the afternoon. From the resultant well flighted free-kick the ball was glanced into the net by Ziada for the equalising goal.

Dandenong were the team with their tails up and were the more likely team to win it, but it was Sunshine George Cross who came closest to all three points when they were awarded an injury time free kick for a vicious kick that left Slaven Vranesevic writhing in agony.

From the resultant Matthew Oghanna free kick, the ball was glanced onto the knee of Bobby Lojanica who could only direct his effort into the arms of Dandenong City goalkeeper Damir Salcin

It was another disappointing ending for Sunshine George Cross, as players, supporters and management continue to wait for that elusive first win on home soil.
